Three Tone Cafe, Haymarket

Three Tone Cafe,

Shop 8, 405 Sussex Street Sydney

Last week smh wrote an article about some of the best cafes in Sydney. Mentioned in their article http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/blogs/table-talk/wake-up-and-smell-the-coffee-the-smh-good-cafe-guide-is-here-20110617-1g897.html was Three Tone Cafe.

Three Tone Cafe in the middle of Sussex and Dixon Streets and you don't really notice it other than for a little blackboard sign outside the cafe. So after hearing about it my sister & I decided that we would come for breakfast and give their coffee a try.

The menu has a bit of everything... pastas, big breakfasts, open grill sandwiches and various vietnamese foods

And the coffee!!

Eggs Benedict

Not the typical sourdough eggs benedict.. although it was very pretty it was very generous and hearty. The additional salad leaves were actually really good because it make the breakfast a bit more balanced. I wished my poached egg was a bit more runny though..

Big Breakfast

Now for $11.90 this was fricking huge. D & I managed to get through only half of this (mostly the mushrooms and the sausage) and most of the toast was untouched. The serving size was biggggg.

Overall it was okay... I found the coffee to be good but I dont know if I can rave about it. It certainly is better than most of the cafes around Haymarket though.

Avenue Rd, Cafe, Mosman

Avenue Rd Cafe

185 Avenue Road, Mosman

My sister had lunch at Avenue Rd on Sunday afternoon and was more than happy to share her experience. It was her dear high school friend A's wedding that day and what better way to pass the time between the ceremony and the reception other than to eat and chat over coffee?

Berry Shake

Avenue Rd Burger, beef pattie wrapped in proscuitto, fried egg, beetroot relish, tomato and aioli

Prawn Linguine

Eggs Benedict, poached eggs, thick cut white toast, hollandaise sauce and bacon

And ofcourse... coffee

She thought it was very nice and would happily make the trek to Mosman again :)

Strawberry X Cafe, Breakfast, Surry Hills

Strawberry X Cafe

23-33 Mary Street Surry Hills

9280 1161

We had bought one of those ourdeal vouchers for breakfast for 2 at Strawberry X Cafe... The deal was something like $20 for two breakfast dishes, orange juice and coffee and tea. Upon entering Strawberry X Cafe on a Saturday afternoon at about 1pm it seemed like everyone also had the same deal! Quite funny actually.. I think they must have ran out of glasses for the orange juice because they were serving orange juice in every glass possible. Milkshake glasses, tumblers and even beer schooners and beer glasses. We were served orange juice in 2 heinekin tumblers :)

Skim Mocha

I usually drink either skim mochas or skim caps but I've noticed that some places will do horrible cuppacinos but average mochas. So I went for the safe choice here and ordered a mocha. Love my coffee.

English Breakfast Tea

Big Breakfast

Actually I think this may have been called the X breakfast or something.. cant really recall. Two poached eggs, mini sausages, bacon, tomato, mushrooms and toast. Yum!

Eggs Benedict with Bacon

I ordered the eggs benedict but changed the salmon to bacon. They also topped the dish with some grilled asparagus which was a nice touch. I enjoyed this but I get the feeling they may have been low on supplies because I only got one small slice of toast.. which wasnt really enough. But still, great sauce and great poached eggs.

Would I come back? Yes. Although its not the best breakfast place in Sydney, its definitely better than many of the other options in the CBD. The place is located close to central station and world square, about 10 minutes walk away.

Beach Burrito Company, Coogee Beach, Brunch

Beach Burrito Company

260 Coogee Bay Road

I caught up with two good friends today over brunch at Coogee Beach. The weather was kind to us and we chose to catch up at the Beach Burrito Company. I was interested to try it again because the last time I came here (which was around two years ago) the experience was somewhat disappointing.

First of all- what to eat? Theres so many choices during brunch because you've got all the breakfast choices AND all the lunch choices so it takes twice as long to make a decision. Eventually I settled on breakfast and ordered the courtyard's special of smoked salmon and poached eggs.

Our drinks were first to arrive..

Skim Cappucino

Orange Juice

It took an hour later but finally our food arrived.

Pepper grilled asparagus wrapped in smoked salmon served with poached eggs, pancetta, sourdough and hollandaise

Boy was I happy. The poached eggs were perfect- so good. They didn't even drizzle water when you break them apart. I always fail at poached eggs so the only times I ever get poached eggs is at cafes and these were damn good.

All or Nothing- Eggs any style, bacon, field mushrooms, sausages, baked beans and roast tomato served with toast and a creamy pesto sauce

I tried a bit of the bacon from this and realized that I haven't had bacon in like.. six months. Why?! When did I forget that bacon tasted so good?

The serving size was good and W didn't manage to finish her plate.

Overall it was a much better experience than the first. The food and coffee were good and although the service was slow its understandable for Sunday brunch/lunch/breakfast.

Taste Baguette Cafe, Market Street Sydney

Taste Baguette
Market Street (next to Myer entrance)

If you're looking for a nice, decent and yummy place for brunch in the Sydney, the CBD is probably the worst place to go. You'll most likely end up at a tourist trap eating crappy food at rip off prices. I've yet to find a good breakfast/brunch place within 10minutes walking distance of Town Hall Station. I've been to the Grace Cafe, MoS cafe, Palate cafe.. numerous random cafes along George, Pitt, Clarence and Kent streets and none of them have really stood out. Which brings me to the moral of the story- dont expect a good breakfast in the CBD. But coffee in the CBD is okay. This post is about coffee :)

Anyhoos so what do three sexy young ladies do on a chilly Sunday afternoon? Chat at a cafe over coffee ofcourse :) On weekends most of the better cafes are closed so we decided to go to the Taste Baguette cafe on Market Street. The cafe uses campos coffee which has a smoother richer taste.

Side note: Do not ever go to the Taste cafe in World Square. I've been there numerous times, and although I loved it the first time, each subsequent visit thereafter was downright sh*t. I've had to wait 20 minutes for a coffee at 8am in the morning (hello? peak hour? 20 minutes is unacceptable). I've had orders forgotten. The second last time I went the lady who made my order burnt by toast. And it was obviously burnt and you know what she friggin did? She got a knife and scraped off the burnt bits and had the nerve to butter it and serve it to me. I was so angry after that, but late for work that I just ate the damned thing anyways. Anyways the last straw was when I went for breakfast and ordered an eggs benedict baguette and waited a very long time only to get a baguette without any hollandaise sauce. Boy was I pissed. So I refuse to ever return to the World Square Taste cafe.

But anyways- the Market Street one was alot better. Seemed like it was being run by a lot more competent people than the imbeciles at World Square.

Skim Cappuccino $4.00 eat in

Green tea and chocolate macaroons $2.50 each.

The coffee was good, the service was fine and the location is very handy so I actually quite liked this place. I would recommend this place for coffee- although I havent tried the baguettes. Actually I've been burned too many times by Taste in general that I dont think I'll ever try the baguettes again.
