Pyrmont
I absolutely love the Sydney Fish Markets. It is one of the things that makes me proud to be from Sydney. Most people are proud of the Opera House or the Bridge, but nope not me. If you're visiting Sydney I'll probably tell you to head down to the Sydney Fish Markets and stuff yourself silly.
A few things that you should know:
1) Parking at SFM is horrendous. If you're planning to drive, park somewhere else (Harris Street is a good idea) and walk to the market. The reason is that you can spend up to 30minutes trying to find a spot and the parking rate is $3 for the first hour (Which is not bad) but jumps up to something like $8 an hour thereafter. Its also possible to walk from Town hall station to the fish markets, it takes about 30minutes? Its a nice stroll. Otherwise take the bus from QVB or outside Energy Australia on George Street.
2) The place is packed so get ready to be shoved aside by eager Asian tourists.
3) BYO is the norm for drinks
4) Beware of the seagulls. They have been known to swoop down and steal the crab sticks off innocent people. I suggest one person carry the platter, and another to fend off the seagulls.
The food is so fresh and really yummy. Its also really cheap because you'll be paying half of what you would in a nice seafood restaurant along the harbour.
Grilled Seafood Platter
Obviously presentation isn't a word thats exists here. Everything is sort of thrown together onto a big plastic plate. We ordered a Grilled Platter for Two with scallops, oysters, calamari, bbq octopus, grilled gemfish (SO FRESH YUM), fresh king prawns and chips and shared it between three girls. It was more than enough and at $36.50 pretty damn awesome.
Sashimi Sashimi
Salmon sashimi $16 for about 300 grams. This is the equivalent of crack for food addicts. That is all I need to say.
